How Environment Affects Sleep

There is nothing better than a solid night's sleep. Waking up feeling energized and rested allows you to function at maximum capacity at work and home.

Unfortunately, this is a feeling that far too many people are unfamiliar with because they do not sleep well. Did you know that a few minor tweaks to your sleep environment can dramatically affect how well you sleep?

Room Temperature

While snuggling into bed for a long winter's nap makes you think of nestling into a warm and cozy pile of blankets, you might be surprised to learn that a cool room is a better solution for a good night's sleep. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that a cool room temperature is one of the most critical factors in getting a good night's sleep. While the ideal temperature might vary by a couple of degrees, most doctors recommend setting the temperature somewhere between 60 to 67 degrees.

Why does room temperature have such a strong effect on our sleep patterns? Our bodies naturally tend to have a slight dip in our core temperature in the evening. So turning down the temperature signals your body that it is time to sleep.

Noise

Another element of an optimal sleep environment is controlling the noise in the bedroom. A noise disturbance while sleeping can shift your body from a deep sleep state to a lighter one, impacting your physical and mental health. If you live in an environment where it is difficult to control the noise outside your bedroom, block out outside noises with a fan or white noise machine. The whir of a fan or ambient sounds can mask external noise and help you fall and stay asleep.

Low Light

The body's circadian rhythms strongly influence how well you sleep. Your circadian rhythms are impacted by light and darkness, so keeping your bedroom dark and removing screens from the sleep environment will help you sleep better. In the evening, when it gets dark, your brain produces the hormone melatonin to induce sleep naturally. Therefore, committing to low light in your bedroom will help to assist the natural sleep cycle in your body and allow you to rest well.

Quality Mattress

A custom-made mattress guarantees a deep, restful sleep night after night. Your custom mattress can support your body all night long, reducing sudden discomfort leading to tossing and turning. Switching mattresses can relieve insomnia, fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns, and even snoring or sleep apnea.
