Firm vs. Soft Mattress: Which is Best?

When it is time to shop for a new mattress, there are several choices you will need to make in the process. One of the most important choices is how soft or firm your new mattress will be. Firmness is a somewhat subjective choice for each individual. However, there are some things to know and consider when deciding if a firm or soft mattress is best for you.

Firmness Rating

Mattress firmness is measured on a scale of 1 to 10. The rating one refers to extremely soft mattresses, and a 10 rating refers to a very hard mattress. Very few mattresses are made on those extreme ends of the scale. Most people sleep on mattresses that fall between 4 and 7 on the firmness scale.

Individual Preference

Before shopping for your new mattress, take a moment to consider mattresses that you have slept on in the past. Were you more comfortable on a soft and plush mattress that conforms to your body? Or did you prefer a firmer feel that doesn't allow much sinkage? This quick reflection will lead you in the right direction for your new mattress.

Sleep Position

Next, determine your sleep position when you sleep. Generally, those who prefer to sleep on the back or stomach are more comfortable on firmer mattresses. However, those who sleep on their side gravitate toward a softer mattress. Again, this is not a rule but a starting point.

Body Weight

Your physical size will affect how soft or firm a mattress feels to you. Lighter or smaller people may find that firm beds are too hard to sleep on, while heavier people might decide that they sink in too much to a softer mattress.

Partner Preference

Of course, if you are sharing the bed with someone, you will need to consider their sleep and firmness preferences, too, when choosing your new mattress. This might require a compromise, but some manufacturers can customize each side of a bed individually.

Firmness vs. Support

In any conversation about the firmness of a mattress, it is essential to note that firmness does not equal support. These two things are both important but not equal in the world of mattress production. While firmness refers to how the bed's surface feels, support determines how well the mattress supports the body to help maintain proper spinal alignment.
